The Coalition Government has committed $10 million to upgrade the Katherine Aquatic centre to become a modern facility for the Katherine and the Big Rivers Region.
The funding will deliver an upgraded 50-metre, eight-lane swimming pool and a new splash park. This will improve the home base for the Katherine Multi Sports Club and the Katherine Swim Club, and provide low-cost options for training, fitness or a family day out.
Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said the Coalition Government was committed to providing facilities that will improve health and wellbeing for communities outside Australia’s cities.
“The Coalition strongly believes that people who live in regional or remote areas should have access to services and facilities that will improve their lives,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
“Swimming is an important skill and an upgraded aquatic centre will provide access to modern facilities for everyone – whether for serious training or fun – which will ultimately improve the physical and mental health of people in the community.”
Country Liberal Party candidate for Lingiari Damien Ryan said: “The upgraded aquatic centre will be a fantastic modern sport and recreational facility for the region, especially for Katherine families with young children.
“The new facility will go a long way to improving liveability in the region, particularly during Katherine’s hot summer months.
“I thank the Deputy Prime Minister for this commitment, and I am pleased to have worked together with the Katherine Town Council, the president of the Katherine Swimming Club and the local Katherine MLA, Jo Hersey, to deliver this funding for the aquatic centre.”
Only the Coalition Government will continue to deliver a better future for regional communities as part of our plan to build a strong economy and a stronger future.
