SENATOR THE HON. FIONA NASH
MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT, REGIONAL COMMUNICATIONS, AND RURAL HEALTH
SENATOR FOR NEW SOUTH WALES
THE HON DR PETER HENDY MP
ASSISTANT CABINET SECRETARY
ASSISTANT MINISTER FOR FINANCE
MEMBER FOR EDEN-MONARO
A re-elected Turnbull-Joyce Government will invest $20 million into a locally-led NSW South Coast Jobs and Investment Package.
The announcement was made in Narooma today by the Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash alongside Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Dr Peter Hendy.
The package will help create local jobs and growth, build a highly skilled local workforce, take advantage of export opportunities and diversify the regional economy.
The package will attract co-investment from businesses and from other levels of government which will see the total investment in the region expected to exceed $40 million.
Dr Hendy said that the NSW South Coast Jobs and Investment Package will see the region put forward its plan including key strengths and industries which can grow the local economy and employ people in the future.
“Applications for grants from the fund will be assessed against the South Coast’s own economic growth plan, which it will produce at the request of the Coalition Government, and against a Jobs Growth Assessment Criteria,” Dr Hendy said.
“This is not Canberra dictating to the South Coast. This is Canberra partnering with the South Coast; taking direction from the South Coast. Local knowledge knows best.
“The NSW South Coast Jobs and Investment Package will bring forward local business investment and expansion, creating jobs in regional areas like southern Eurobodalla and the Bega Valley.”
Dr Hendy said it was his number one priority to see jobs created for local families and this package will build local skills and drive export opportunities by harnessing local knowledge.
“My number one priority is to see jobs created for local families. That’s why the Turnbull Government has a plan for a Strong New Economy which invests directly in the NSW South Coast to build a highly skilled local workforce,” he said.
“Key to our jobs and investment package is harnessing local know-how, because locals, not Canberra, know what’s best for our community.
“The Coalition Government’s local plan will ensure the sustainability of our local communities.”
Minister for Regional Development and Nationals Deputy Leader Fiona Nash said grants from the package will be awarded through three streams:
- Support for businesses to grow and bring forward expansion plans
- Building local infrastructure
- Investment in skills and training programmes to build a highly skilled local workforce
“The NSW South Coast Jobs and Investment Package will create community-driven government investment – a genuine partnership between the Coalition Government and local communities,” Minister Nash said.
“These grants will assist local businesses to grow and expand, as well as encourage new businesses to enter the region, creating new sustainable jobs.
“As Deputy Nationals Leader and Minister for Regional Development, I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to.
“We don’t want our young people to take their talents to Sydney – they need good job prospects right here on the NSW South Coast.
“Only the Coalition has a locally-led plan for the South Coast to create local jobs and local growth.”
