A re-elected Turnbull-Joyce Government will invest $20 million into a locally-led Goulburn Valley Jobs and Investment Package.
The package will help create local jobs and growth, build a highly skilled local workforce, take advantage of export opportunities and diversify the regional economy.
The package will attract co-investment from businesses and from other levels of government which will see the total investment in the region expected to exceed $40 million.
Nationals candidate for Indi Marty Corboy said he was elated to deliver a Jobs and Investment Package which would be directed by local knowledge and ideas.
“The Goulburn Valley Jobs and Investment Package will see the region put forward its plan including key strengths and industries which can grow the local economy and employ people in the future.
“Applications for grants from the fund will be assessed against the Goulburn Valley’s own economic growth plan, which it will produce at the request of the Coalition Government, and against a Jobs Growth Assessment Criteria.
“This is not Canberra dictating to the Goulburn Valley. This is Canberra partnering with the Goulburn Valley; taking direction from the Goulburn Valley. Local knowledge knows best.
“The Goulburn Valley Jobs and Investment Package will bring forward local business investment and expansion, creating jobs in the Murray area, which includes regional centres Wodonga, Wangaratta and Mansfield.
Liberal Candidate for Indi Sophie Mirabella welcomed news of the announcement.
“Jobs, jobs growth and job security is the number one concern for North Eastern Victorians. The Coalition government’s local plan will ensure the sustainability of our local communities,” Ms Mirabella said.
“We are part of the food bowl of Australia, we have incredible manufacturing, we are a transport hub. I am proud to be part of a Coalition team that will work with the community to maximise our local economic strengths.”
Minister for Regional Development and Nationals Deputy Leader Fiona Nash said grants from the package will be awarded through three streams:
- Support for businesses to grow and bring forward expansion plans
- Building local infrastructure
- Investment in skills and training programmes to build a highly skilled local workforce
“The Goulburn Valley Jobs and Investment Package will create community-driven government investment – a genuine partnership between the Coalition Government and local communities,” Minister Nash said.
“These grants will assist local businesses to grow and expand, as well as encourage new businesses to enter the region, creating new sustainable jobs.
“As Deputy Nationals Leader and Minister for Regional Development, I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to.
“We don’t our young people to take their talents to Melbourne – they need good job prospects right here in the Goulburn Valley.
“Only the Coalition has a locally-led plan for the Goulburn Valley to create local jobs and local growth.”
